What Works For You. It's a concept if you will. One that I'd like you to let into your brain. Be the director. The employer of all the variables. Put them to work for you....not the other way around.
When it comes to getting better as an athlete, getting from point A to B to C involves a great deal of discipline. As you make that progressive journey, please be aware that there is one aspect that rides high above all else in the path to success....what is it? ATTITUDE. It's been said, time and time again, that attitude is a behavioral choice, that as individuals, we have control over. WE make that choice, positive or negative. It's pure logic. Go into any social situation with a negative attitude and note the outcome....usually negative. Go into that same situation with a positive attitude? The outcome is more frequently positive. Does it always work out that way? I believe it does if we hit the following gates:
- PLAN - You've heard me say it "Plan your work - Work your plan". As athletes we must task ourselves with daily, monthly, annual objectives. Set up a plan that makes sense FOR YOU. Not all of us digest big pieces. If that's the case, plan more in the short term, or vice verse. Remember, you can always tweak your plan. Just be sure to keep solid challenges ahead of you.
- PREPARE - Set it up MENTALLY....insert Johnny Mantra -"Get your mind right". If it's visualization technique and glorious victory you need to play out in your head? Then prepare that way. If it's the "mellow, gettin' ready laid back low down approach"? Then perfect. Music? great....Whatever makes sense for YOU. Find something that works. Something that helps you prepare. Set it up PHYSICALLY. Mobility, Stretching, Auxiliary Movement, Muscle Activation, Variability, Hi-Lo Time Domains for training.....Address YOUR needs and keep them in line with your goals. Set it up with NUTRITION - The biggest prep staging involves nutrition. Get that wired and all the mental and physical performance will be a hell of alot easier.....A HELLUVA'LOT EASIER!!
- EXECUTE & ASSESS - Put it to action....If all of the work on the planning and preparation front has been performed - properly - then the ability to perform successfully should be there when the time comes. All of the Plan....All of the Preparation....All of it culminates into what you do on a daily basis. If you fall short of your goal then assess the outcome and what could be changed in order to affect the outcome positively. Always apply changes. Always evolve towards the goal, whatever it may be. Keep adapting, moving forward. Family, Career, Nutrition, Mental & Physical Training....PLAN, PREPARE, EXECUTE & ASSESS. Make it work for YOU....not the other way around.
