Fear is a Liar

I've been practicing CrossFit for a long time now. I've made incredible gains over the years. Having started with online videos from CF Mainsite and practicing CrossFit in a local Globo-Gym....that was my way into this club. Along the way, I've been injured, both physically and mentally. I've also been dealt a fair share of failure. For some odd reason, I keep going back for more. I guess there's a side of me that enjoys kicking my own ass. Total truth? I'm better for it.

Looking back on all the methods I've employed and fired, some good, some bad, I regularly come to a road block.Whether it's a movement, a certain weight, or any goal for achievement within the sport of CF. One thing continues to manifest itself and it usually comes in the form of FEAR. Yes........ FEAR. All of us have one or more of these hanging around between our ears. Over the years I have developed a fear of believing that I am proficient or great at any one exercise under the CF umbrella. For if I do, I will stop evolving in a positive way. In this case, as with any in life, it is FEAR that drives me to become better and continually hone my skill. FEAR can also be counter to one's success. Simply put, certain actions are sometimes avoided altogether due to FEAR. I tend to believe differently when it comes to the gym, or better yet CrossFit. I tend to see FEAR as a motivator. I see it as a way to drive myself towards achieving more. It's a control that only I have the key to. Where else in life do you get such an opportunity?

We all seek a positive evolution. Attempts at evolving for the better involve failure. With failure exists a tendency to avoid. This avoidance is FEAR rearing it's ugly head. It drives us in that very way. We try harder so we can avoid failure. Put yet another way, we look at our path from the first time of performing that which is foreign, to the time where we have performed the foreign numerous times. Over that time our performance of the foreign progressively becomes native to our being.....the number of failures along the way are likely infinite. But if you look within all of those failures, you'll find that they were critical to achieving your goals. Embracing that which you are deficient in will make you more aware of why and how you fail. Continue to push the limits of your fear and you will get stronger, faster, smarter.....just plain better. In other words, practice something that you suck at....even if it scares the shit out of you, become familiar with it and keep doing it. Hey, we all learned to walk.

Parting thoughts for those that want to develop a solid foundation for anything CrossFit/Life
Talk to your local CrossFit coach or your whatever coach or your mentor. Additionally, go online and really dig into a topic. Find out the basics of how to begin building strength and flexibility and balance and power. Apply all of the fundamentals you learn without taking shortcuts. Be patient and remember that FEAR is simply false evidence appearing real.

If you truly want to continue to evolve, then you must learn about that which you fear. By doing so, you'll more than likely find a way to overcome it.
