Johnny 99 - New W.O.D.
What is Johnny 99? Well it's a couple things. First off it's the name of a Johnny Cash song that appeared on his 1983 album Johnny 99. Shortly thereafter, Bruce Springsteen put his stamp on a cover of the song which he included on his 1984 Nebraska album. If you listen to the song you'll hear it roll through the story of Ralph, who's dubbed Johnny 99 after receiving a life sentence. FYI- The song is NOT about me. Johnny lost his job, shot a clerk at a liquor store and received 99 years in prison for manslaughter. That's not the end though....in the final moments of Johnny's trial, he lays it on the line and proceeds to tell the judge, "Mean John Brown", the following statement;
Well your honor I do believe I'd be better off dead,
And if you can take a man's life for the thoughts that's in his head,
Then won't you sit back in that chair and think it over judge one more time,
And let 'em shave off my hair and put me on that execution line
Yep, Johnny makes the call. All in and taking full responsibility for his actions. I know it may seem a long way to the point here.....what is the point to this again???? Oh yeah, Johnny 99 stands for a few things. For one, it's a great story told by Johnny Cash or the Boss, depending on the version you prefer. And two, it's a new W.O.D. that I named for the sole purpose that we can control what we do and how we do it when we enter into a W.O.D. . The right nutrition, the right technique, the intelligence to keep best form during a W.O.D. and finally setting objectives and working daily to achieve them. Johnny F'd-Up and decided that he should pay for what he did....he took a life and therefore should give up his. No re-do here. Thankfully, we get re-do's in the Kage. Johnny 99 will test you this way. When you F-Up it's important that you're honest with yourself to perform that rep again. Don't skip it....embrace it! Skipping breeds cowardice, even if it is one time in a rep scheme of 21. Tell yourself that and I guarantee you never skip again. Either that, or we shave your hair and put you on the execution line. ENOUGH WITH THE LECTURE BOY!
I give you JOHNNY 99
Johnny 99 is 4 movments in one. It is performed as follows;
Step 1-Burpee Push-Up (chest to deck)
Step 2-Prior to standing, drop back down into a hand release push-up
Step 3- Jump up and pull-up (chin over bar)
Step 4- Toes to bar immediately following pull-up
99 total reps for Tx
**My first attempt occured this past Tuesday. My time was 15:34. I counted every rep and performed 3 additional reps due to missed toe to bar contact. I can go faster. In the end you will have totalled 99 burpees, 99 hand release push-ups, 99 pull-ups and finally 99 toes to bar. This W.O.D is portable anywhere you have a pull up bar. Add it to your W.O.D. catalog. What's next? Johnny 99 T-shirts. Stay tuned.
Stay strong!
-Johnny
