THIS IS WATER - by David Foster Wallace

READ FIRST - Watch the video after - You'll need about 10 minutes to do so - YOUR CHOICE.....

I have some really cool stuff I've been writing regarding the CF Journey.   However, I believe that this whole CrossFit thing really begins with who, what, where, when and why we allow the choices that we make, to affect our personal lives.  I believe that we, as individuals, can make choices in order to become better human beings as well as improve our society.

There are these two young fish swimming along and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says "Morning, boys.  How's the water?" And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes "What the hell is water?"

THIS IS WATER is a Speech given by David Foster Wallace to Kenyon College's 2005 graduating class.  In it he states the following;
"The most obvious important realities are often the ones that are hardest to see and talk about. Stated as an English sentence of course, this is just a banal platitude. But the fact is that in the day to day trenches of an adult existence, banal platitudes can have a life or death importance."

This speech cuts to the chase about reality. Meanings and theories of society do not have to be so extremely hardwired. I am personally guilty of this in more than a few categories of my life. This hard wiring is ultimately how I process choices in favor of happiness and life in general. We all define life differently yet many of our goals and aspirations have become very similar from individual to individual. So much so that the term "individual" has become more of a group thought in what society has dictated we become. This isn't about race or religion or political values. This is about choices.....Choices that we make in order to learn how to live with the people, places and the things we encounter daily.....we are forced to accept or deny these encounters if we are to afford ourselves any form of sanity.  Throughout this process, I believe it to be critical and of great importance that we strive to be considerate of our fellow man and not get so caught up in our own bullshit that our path becomes obscured. Obscured in the sense that we fail to consider that the stranger standing next to us in a public setting is potentially facing something far greater than anything we have ever encountered in our lives. Likely? Maybe/Maybe not.....But Possible. Think about it.

The choices in life are important and we ideally can make the choices based upon the details that we allow ourselves to see. There are so many bright spots in this life to explore in order to seek and potentially find happiness. My hope is that I may find what works for me....more frequently than not. My family, my friends, those that are so very important to me.....I can only hope that they all find what it is that they seek to be truly important. . Once you see it - talk about it - embrace it - then......ACT ON IT.
